QUESTION 3

How are CNN, BBC, and Aljazeera using citizen journalists

to gather User-Generated Content (UGC?)

To obtain user-generated content (UGC) for their news

reporting, major news outlets like CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera

all employ citizen journalists through various means:

UGC SUBMISSION PLATFORMS: For users to submit

images, videos, and stories, these news organizations

frequently offer online platforms or specific areas on

their websites. The editorial staff of the news organization

then selects and examines this content. CNN's iReport program

is one website where people may submit first-hand reports,

videos, and photos of breaking news stories. Similar to this,

the BBC runs "BBC Witness," which allows people to

contribute photos and videos of significant events.

Additionally, users can share their stories and experiences with

the network through "Sharek," an Al Jazeera-featured program.

SOCIAL MEDIA INTERACTION: On social media, CBN,

Al Jazeera, and BBC all actively interact with their viewers.

They urge consumers to tag the news outlet or use certain

hashtags while sharing articles. Journalists and social

media managers keep an eye out on these networks for any

possible user-generated content.

CROWDSOURCING INITIATIVES: Occasionally, these

news outlets start targeted campaigns or projects to

gather information from the public on certain subjects or events.

In order to add a variety of viewpoints to their coverage, they

want their audience to submit relevant information.
